Dealers are required to update customers on the status of their hand and answer any questions. They use active listening skills to provide superior customer service, and they often deliver nonverbal cues such as nodding to show that they are giving their full attention to the customer’s comments. They also paraphrase what has been said to demonstrate that they fully understand.
A blackjack player’s primary objective is to beat the dealer. If a player has a pair of tens and an ace, they have a natural, which pays one and a half times their bet. A player may also make an insurance bet, which is usually equal to their bet, if they believe that the dealer has a blackjack. In some casinos, the dealer looks at their down card before they pay off a player’s insurance bet, while others do not.
Typically, the dealer’s hand will be a combination of an ace and a face or picture card. If the dealer’s total is less than 21, they must hit; if it is greater, they must stand. The dealer must also beat a player’s hand with a total of 21; if the player surpasses this summation, they win. If the dealer has a higher hand than the participant’s, they sweep their bet; if both have the same summation, it is considered a push and the cards are swept up to start another round.
Blackjack can also be played in tournament form, with different payouts depending on the type of tournament and the number of competitors. A typical tournament format is Elimination Blackjack, in which the lowest-stack players are dropped after a set number of deals to determine the final winner. Other tournament formats may include Progressive Blackjack, in which the highest-stack players move to a new table after each deal. Some casinos also offer side bets on the outcome of the blackjack hand, with a player able to place a wager on this before the dealer checks their card. This type of side bet is not available everywhere, however.
